I finally managed to get a GPD XD!       ( ;v; )

The GPD XD is an android based handheld, specifically designed to look as the always-elegant 3DS, and aimed towards emulators, and android games! (YEAH, the lamest way to describe it would be "a phoneless phone (or small tablet) with a gamepad attached to its butt" but that's pretty much what it is and it's exactly what I've always wanted hhaha)
Look at this video review if you're curious about it!

It has a quad-core Cortex-A17 CPU and it is strong enough to handle SEGA Dreamcast emulation (via reicast), and everything below that including Nintendo DS, MAME, DosBox, etcetera!

It costs 180$ (us dollars) and so far I super love it and it's the best thing I've ever bought for myself so far <3

Here you have it running OuO on it lol

I ordered this thing online (mercadolibre, which is like ebay but for latin america, Argentina in my case) as soon as I found out someone from my country was reselling them brand new (it's very difficult to import this kind of stuff and it's usually super expensive and sometimes you cannot get them at all, it's a long story) and two weeks later (5 days ago roughly) it arrived at my front door and I have been toying around with it since then!

Anyway, here's a review of all customization I've done to it so far:
notreblogs.tumblr.com/post/173…

TL;DR I installed a custom bloatware-free rom, set up a custom launcher (TVlauncher), made some customized icons for it, installed my favorite emulators, games, apps, and here we are!

once again the obligatory "sorry for the lack of arts" hhaha... I've had a bunch of pretty emotionally draining weeks lately (sister visiting, work fixing computers, sport events to watch, hell my CAT GOT LOST YESTERDAY and we spent all day looking for him around town and only found him at 22:00 when the town had calmed down and were able to hear his yelling from a mile away and managed to bring him back home ANYWAY IT WAS TOUGH).

but yeah
maybe I'll try to draw something one day, for now I'm happy with this shit, I haven't even "sat down and played" anything there yet but I'm still hyped and customizing it is a big part of the fun hhaha <3

anyway if you by any chance were on the fence wondering if you should buy this or not... yeah it's totally worth it if you can afford it and I very much recommend it~

Ahh, I don't really know to be frank ;v;

GPD XD is a chinese handheld after all, but a good quality one at that.

I bought mine from a reseller on mercadolibre. Brand new and unopened but still yk

But yeah anyway, I think this is the official site: www.gpdxd.com/
There's other sites like www.geekbuying.com or dreamesper.com/ but... yeah, you're gonna have to look around and see whats the most viable way to get it, taking into account things such as shipping, import taxes, and stuff like that where applicable.

You can also try asking on this subreddit www.reddit.com/r/gpdxd/ or join their discord server

This is something I need to keep an eye on for sure. If only it could play Gamecube games then it would be an immediate buy for me.

Yeah, unfortunately both Gamecube and PS2 emulation on android is still a long way to go, and are pretty much out of the scope of the current system specs.

There are working emulators for them (dolphin for gamecube, and Play! for PS2) but as they are right now they require a very powerful system.

Your best bet in that case would be either to find dreamcast ports of the games via the emulator Reicast (if they aren't gamecube exclusives) or try looking up the "GPD Win", which is another model, much more powerful (and pricey) that runs Windows 10 and includes a full QWERTY keyboard (it's kind of not the same feeling since it is, for all accounts, a fully-fledged pocket-sized laptop pc).

The other option is to run the games on a gamestream-able desktop PC (new-ish nvidia gfx cards) and have it Streamed to the GPD XD using an app like moonlight-stream.com/ ; which runs really well on the GPD XD as far as I've read heh

but yeah, it's a shame there's no fast gamecube/ps2 on android. Reicast really is an oddity among emulators; even my phone can run those games at full speed!

I see! But there's no worries on playing GCN games, I actually do have Dolphin on my computer and I do enjoy playing some of my childhood classics (Even though my Smash 4 Gamecube controller + Wii U GCN adapter combo tends to freak out the controls a lot), I just think it would be so great to take those games on the go.

And Nintendo basically killing off the Virtual Console for Switch only adds fuel to the fire for me.

Be sure to watch some review videos heh~

The system looks the coolest with all this customizing and fine-tuning but it's otherwise pretty much ready to use out of the box! (if you don't mind the built-in launcher with all the preloaded apps and emulators heh)

Yeah ikr! And it's of very good quality, even for that price!
The thumbsticks feel real nice, the screen folds nicely, the speakers sound really good, the buttons are great, and the hardware is really good and it's devoid of unused stuff such as camera, gps, proximity/light sensor, etc, and that cuts a lot of the cost of it heh~

It also doesn't have bluetooth, but a slightly more expensive version called the GPD XD+ ("plus") does have bluetooth, along with extra RAM, but yeah it's obviously more expensive heh

It's not like he wanted to escape or anything, he didn't even flee from home or anything like that... we took him for a vaccination but he escaped right after the veterinarian handed him back to me right after he had taken the needle. He ran away straight to the plaza and we lost sight of him; pretty much spent all day lost wandering there. and we (me & my mother) went out looking for him like 3 times before we finally managed to find him and bring him back home!

it's a good thing that this town is less than a mile wide lmao
